I was never completely satisfied with the lock-box sub design, so I endeavored to create a spare-tire well enclosure. The DMC spare tire is kind of worthless anyway and I have roadside coverage :)

The new sub: MB Quart RLP-304. A shallow-mount sub of approx 3" depthIMG 20140530 181553

Critical depth check. You can do all the math on paper, but it never hurts to take a few actual measurements before getting too far in to your project!IMG 20140601 151050

Lowest ring is for the sub, middle ring will be for a flush-mounted grille. The circles were done by jigsaw and turned out decently. A final carpeting will hide the remaining imperfections.IMG 20140603 212615

Terminal box installed. I will fiberglass around this, which will provide a relief area for the terminals and wire.IMG 20140603 210733

Bowed-in section of fiberglass will allow for a "handle" relief. There is a natural depression in the trunk tub near the body mounting bolt. Keeping the upper MDF ring full size but moving the fiberglass inward here will create a handle that can be used to lift the enclosure up for removal.IMG 20140603 211506

Almost finished with masking for the first fiberglass layer.IMG 20140604 165147

Base layer of fiberglass down. Lots of air bubbles but the basic shape is good enough to build on.IMG 20140605 174458

Form, pried out of the tire well. Time to clean up the rough patches and continue to add layers.IMG 20140608 154752

The "lid" is now on the "bowl". Next step is to angle grind the bowl so it's more even / flush with the lid.IMG 20140611 153711

Post grinding with fiberglass "kitty hair" fill around the outside & inside edge. Looking real ugly at this point!IMG 20140611 164430
